James Cameron has offerred up some information regarding a character returning to Pandora, for the upcoming Avatar 2...

This story contains a spoiler for the film Avatar.

James Cameron was recently honoured by Popular Mechanics at their Breakthrough Awards, where he was presented with a gong by Sigourney Weaver. Whilst at the awards, Vulture managed to get some time with Cameron, and get some information on the upcoming Avatar sequels. In particular, the return of Sigourney Weaver to the series.

I’m sure by this point most of you who are reading this have seen Avatar so are well aware of the death of Weaver’s character.

When asked, Cameron initially deflected questions about Weaver's return for Avatar 2. But when the interviewer stated that Weaver had already said she’d be returning, Cameron responded with:

“Well, I don’t want to disabuse her of that fantasy. But have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling? A lot happens on that planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her. She’s there for fifteen years ahead of time. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t jump to conclusions. And I’ve already said way too much about Avatar 2 and 3 here and there, but people piece it together like those voice cameos and tell the whole story! When you have a science-fiction series, a science-fiction franchise, you’re never dead, unless your DNA is expunged from the universe. And then there’s always time travel!”

So reading between the lines there it would seem that some flashbacks will be worked into the narrative for Avatar 2 and 3 which will keep the director occupied for the next five years at least.

Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of Avatar, I appreciate much of what Cameron achieved from a technical perspective, and am interested to see how he can push things further with the sequels.
