The upcoming X-Men spin-off, The Wolverine, is set to learn the lessons of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, says Hugh Jackman...
Production on The Wolverine isn’t set to begin for a while yet, not least because actor Hugh Jackman is committed to big screen version of the musical Les Miserables. But the right noises, thus far, seem to be coming from the project.
As he undertakes promotional duties for his new movie, Real Steel, Jackman spent a bit of timing nattering to The Guardian, where the conversation moved onto the subject of the upcoming X-Men spin-off.
“I think we've got the chance to nail the character this time, to do the hole-in-one. We haven't managed that yet. On the last movie, we complicated it with too many other characters. And there'll be more women this time, which is good. The last one was so masculine!” he told them.
He also promised that “The new film will go more into the character. I don't think we've ever seen his rage expressed properly. We're letting go with this one of the whole 'Who am I? Where did I come from? Oh no, I've lost my memory' thing. I feel like that's sent us all to sleep. 'Yeah, whatever pal. We're bored! Fine, you were a sushi chef, whatever it was, can we just get on with the story now?'"
The only problem with getting rid of some of the angst and background, of course, is you end up making the kind of decisions that led to Joel Schumacher’s Batman movies. However, that’s not quite what’s being suggested here. And Jackman is, after all, right: there’s little point asking the same questions of the character time after time.
James Mangold is directing The Wolverine, anyway, which we’re not now expecting until 2013 (although no release date has been announced as of yet).
