Clint Eastwood is set to come out of acting retirement to appear in baseball drama Trouble With The Curve.
After completing Gran Torino and turning in a performance that was another highlight in his long and brilliant career, Clint Eastwood announced his intention to retire from acting. His plan was that he would instead continue to direct. But after focusing on such duties for a few years, it appears that the great man is ready to step in front of a camera again in the role of an ageing scout in the baseball drama Trouble With The Curve.
Based on a script by Randy Brown, long time collaborator and business partner of Eastwood, Robert Lorenz, is set to direct the film. It's about an ageing baseball scout who is slowly losing his vision, which causes his career to be put under threat. He takes a final scouting trip with his daughter to check out prospective players.
Interestingly, it will be the first time in many years that Eastwood has appeared in a film not directed by himself. You have to go back to 1993's In The Line Of Fire for the last example.Presumably the fact that he has such a close relationship with the director, and the reported quality of the script, are key factors here.
I’m a sucker for baseball films, and with Moneyball due out in the UK shortly, I'm pleased that there's another on the way. Trouble With The Curve sounds as though it will take a similar approach to the best baseball films (and, indeed, sports movies in general) where the sport will act as the backdrop but personal relationships and development are always the main point of focus.
Trouble With The Curve might just be a project worth looking out for...
