Universal Soldier TV show in the works

Universal Soldier

Dig out your necklaces decorated with ears; looks as though they’re making a comeback.

I should be up front from the off, here: I loved Universal Soldier when it came out back in 1992. Sure, I had to wait until it was out on video to see it, as I was way too young to see it at the cinema. But heck, it was worth the wait.

The combination of Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren was a damn fine one, and director Roland Emerich gave them plenty of carnage to engage in.

There have been numerous sequels of varying quality over the years, and another is lined up for next year, in 3D, no less.

But now? It’s being reported that Freemantle Media Enterprises now own the rights to the franchise, and intend to make use of them by creating a TV series. Damian Kindler, who has worked on Stargate and Sanctuary, has even been working on a script for the show. And his track record his hardly shabby.

If all goes to plan, a thirteen part series is set to shoot in Canada next year, using mainly unknowns. But it sounds as though those involved intend for the show to have a big budget and high production values.

More news on this as we get it...
