Just because Scream 4 didn't make as much money as the others, it doesn't mean that Scream 5 isn't happening. And director Wes Craven reckons it will go ahead...
Scream 4 is heading onto DVD and Blu-ray in the US early next month (it’s already out over here), and in the build-up to that, director Wes Craven has been doing a few interviews to promote the release.
One of those interviews was with the folks of Movieweb, and they asked the director whether the slightly underwhelming box office performance of Scream 4 has put the dampeners on the possibility of Scream 5, and the planned second trilogy of films.
After all, in the aftermath of Scream 4 making substantially less cash than its forerunners (it made $97m worldwide, against $161m at the box office for Scream 3), there was talk of the franchise needing a reboot if it was to rediscover its commercial highs.
According to Craven, though, you shouldn’t write Scream 5 off just yet. When asked if he thought the film will go ahead, he said “Yes. The odds are that there will be [Scream 5]. It is something that Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclinced to think that there will be [another]”.
The next obvious question, then. Is Wes Craven likely to be involved, and directing again? “I don’t know,” he said. “My contract gives me first look. If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course I will be a part of it.”
We’ll keep you posted as to any goings-on with a Scream 5. Given how economical the films are to make, and how well they've traditionally fared on DVD, we fancy its chances of being made. In the meantime, here’s the interview over at Movieweb.
