New plot summary arrives for Prometheus

A brief new description of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus gives us a further hint of what its story’s all about. Beware of very mild plot spoilers within…

With specifics a closely guarded secret, little is currently known about Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s belated and eagerly anticipated return to the Alien universe. Just over a week ago, we wrote a rather excitable piece that attempted to slot together all the disparate bits of information to do with the film. In a nutshell, our conclusion was that a leaked synopsis, which appeared on the net earlier this year, was genuine, in spite of Fox’s insistence that it was faked.

In that synopsis, a group of Weyland-Yutani sponsored scientists, upon discovering evidence that life on Earth was created by beings from outer space, head to the stars to meet their makers, and encounter both the key to creation, and a nasty alien threat.

Now, Fox has put out a new plot summary that, while brief, appears to support, rather than contradict, the description above. The following appeared on the official Prometheus page:

Ridley Scott, director of Alien and Blade Runner, returns to the genre he helped define. With Prometheus, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

The film’s title is taken from a Greek myth, in which a titan named Prometheus stole fire from the gods, and as punishment, was tied to a rock to have his liver eaten by a giant eagle. By searching for the secret of creation, it sounds as though the scientists in Ridley Scott's movie will suffer a similarly unpleasant fate.

Prometheus is due out on the 1st June next year.
